The Conflict
Sudan since independence from UK in 1956 is facing internal conflicts (including civil war in the South). The Country has seen many military coups, the latest in 1989 by current President Omar Hassan Al Bashir. Failing economy and deteriorating law & order situation initiated civil war in South by mostly non- Arabs leading to humanitarian disaster due to fierce fighting till 1994. As a result of 2005 protocol and comprehensive peace agreement, some stability returned to Sudan under UN. Accordingly, on 9 July 2011, South Sudan declared independence and the mandate of UNMIS has terminated. Currently a host of unresolved issues continue to fester between North and South Sudan.

During Sudan's mission an exemplary display of courage and dedication by Pakistani troops was well acknowledged internationally. Locals loved them for their affection, care and dutifulness.
