The Conflict
Ivory Coast gained independence in 1960. President Felix ruled the Country for 33 years (1960 - 1993). Elections held in 1995 were marked by violence followed by coup by General Robert Guel in 1999, however, popular support forced him to handover power to Laurent Gbagbo. As a result of failed coup in 2002, rebel forces claimed Northern half of the country, whereas Southern half came under control of Government forces. In 2003, under Linas Marcossis Peace Accord, rebels were given ministerial positions in unity govt. The core issue is a political rivalry between two opposing factions, spanned over a decade, backed by rebel groups on both sides resulting into political instability and leading to military coups; resultantly creating law and order situation. After violent elections held in Nov. 2010 followed by four months long political standoff between opposing factions, a consolidation phase has brought the crisis to an end through meaningful intervention by UN forces.

Pakistani troops are a ray of hope for the violence-hit people of Ivory Coast who contributed in bringing normalcy in to their lives by helping the poor, treating the sick and educating the illiterate, selflessly.
